This study begins with the purpose of fair repositioning of females' social telephone uses that have been disparaged since the early telephone use history. To accomplish the purpose, particular social conditions and communication environments women face were studied, and unique ways of female telephone uses formed by those conditions above were analyzed. Also, things about women telephone users' gratification were explored. The related raw data were collected from an on-line survey process, and statistically and qualitatively analyzed.
Findings show that there is a widespread negative view of women telephone uses. To be more specific, there are unrealistic prejudices against them although telephones have already been ubiquitous. The prejudices are widely and deeply rooted in our society because the majority of males, the old, and even some portion of females hold on to them. Women proved to be more gratified by social telephone uses compared to men because they in general are facing different social conditions from those men are facing, and because females feel uniquely comfortable and familiar when using telephones. Social uses of telephone help women maintain and intensify their human relationships previously developed in the face-to-face mode.
Overall, from the review of prior research and this study's findings, it is found that social uses of telephones play an important role in providing many females with various functional and emotional assistance. Telephone is an important medium for women in that it helps general women users, whose social behaviors are structurally constrained within their home, take care of household affairs, share their joys and sorrows of life with other women, and strengthen their will of life.
The main subject of this study, females' unique social uses of telephones, implies important meanings in terms of practical senses as well as theoretical senses. An Australian qualitative study(Moyal, 1992), which explored the possible impacts of toll policy change such as the introduction of timed local call in the early 1990s on nationwide, diverse Australian women, shows a mature practical consideration for women users who might be affected by the unfavorable telecommunication policy reform. Women's own mode of using telephones and its impacts on their lives should be emphasized immediately in order to reform telecommunication policy for strengthening women's rights, and for introducing fair influences of various types of women's interest groups in the policy-making processes.
The nee-liberalistic tendencies, such as privatization of key telecommunication industries and the shrink of universal services, are seriously threatening women's interests in the telecommunication area. The further full-scale telephone studies with feminism perspectives are anticipated in order not to negatively affect women in the age of digital divide between information haves and have-nots.
