The experiment was conducted to know the effect of organic zinc on growth performance and carcass quality of broilers. A total of 6,000 1-d-old straight run broiler chicks were assigned randomly to 4 dietary treatments for 28 d. Dietary treatments consisted of 40 ㎎/㎏ inorganic zinc (positive control) and 0(control), 40, 80 ㎎/㎏ organic zinc in addition to basal diet. During the experimental period, food and water were provided ad libitum to all broiler chicks. Body weight, feed intake, feed conversion and carcass quality were investigated. Results showed that body weight, feed intake, feed conversion and mortality were not affected by supplemented organic zinc in the diet. But the percentages of skin lesion and down grade broilers were decreased when organic zinc level increased in the diet. However, a significant increased(P<0.05) in tibia and back skin dermis were observed in response to increased levels of datary organic zinc. Tibia epidermis was not significantly increased with increasing dietary organic zinc but back skin epidermis was significantly increased(P<0.05) when birds fed 40㎎/㎏ organic zinc. Most of the dermis skin layer is formed by the strong connective tissue-collagen which is responsible for strong skin of broilers. Zinc plays a role in epidermis cell layer and collagen synthesis, thus affecting susceptibility to skin lesion. Based on the result from this study, it can be concluded that organic zinc does not affect growth performance of broilers but increases dermis and epidermis thickness of the skin that improves the carcass quality of broilers.
