In Siberia, the "peoples of the north," "small peoples (of the north)," or "indigenous northerners" usually include twenty-six ethnic groups whose traditional occupations are hunting, trapping, fishing and reindeer herding. But because of the process of Sovietification and industrialization, their aboriginal religious cult was eliminated, their world of the spirit and the cultural norms were torn into shreds, and their everyday life-style was destructed by socialism.
After Perestroika, a few movements for socio-political and economical autonomy have come out in many places of Siberia. In this social context, the purpose of this study is to analyze the rehabilitation of the native culture in Siberia on the view of sociology of religion.
The first, I analyze shamanism, religious symbol and cosmology of the native peoples in Siberia. Herein, I point out that the native peoples achieved their self identity and the spiritual roots through their traditional religious cult - shamanism.
The second, I explore following two problems: one is that the shaman and shamanism in Siberia were eliminated by socialistic ideology. And the other is, in the process of the sovietification and industrialization, everyday life of the indigenous peoples have been destructed by the environmental pollutions and furthermore their world of spirit and cultural norms were also ruined.
Finally, I review the recent philosophical views and a few movements for the rehabilitation of cultural traditions end shamanism. And suggest a few problems and prospect for socio-cultural development in Siberia.
