The purpose of this study was to investigate the antidiabetic effect of high molecular weight (HMW, 200,000-300,000 kDa) chitosan on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetic ICR mice by analyzing food consumption, body weight, drinking water consumption, urine volume, non-fasting serum glucose, urine glucose, total serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels. HMW chitosan (0.8%) was given to mice as drinking water for 8 weeks. Daily administration of HMW chitosan as drinking water reduced the drinking water consumption, urine volume, non-fasting serum glucose, urine glucose and serum triglyceride levels in STZ-induced type 1 diabetic ICR mice. Therefore, HMW chitosan was effective for improving hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, polydipsia and polyuria in STZ-induced type 1 diabetic ICR mice. It is concluded from this study that HMW chitosan would be useful for relieving type 1 diabetes mellitus.
