Recently, a variety of studies using nonhuman primates for development of drug, vaccines, organ transplantation or treatment of an incurable disease are getting increase in biomedical research field. Therefore, a large number of nonhuman primates were imported from abroad and housed in various laboratory animal facilities. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and the causes of wound occurred in the newly acquired rhesus monkeys from March 2006 to April 2008. All the primates were housed in the individual cage which recommended by Animal Welfare Regulations. Thirty wound cases were occurred in our rhesus monkeys. According to the records, wound cases were as follows; lacerations (23), abrasions (3), fractures (2), cutting (1), others (1). The causes of wound were including inappropriate handling, fighting among the monkeys and unknown. Although some cases were required a plastic surgery to prevent a deterioration of the wounds, there was no life-threatening accident. Our results suggest that nonhuman primate’s care requires more close attention and handling to prevent a traumatic and a bite wound.
