This study examines how European colonialism still underlies most territorial disputes in Africa, how those disputes have been resolved or are likely to be resolved, based on two disputes in the Gulf of Guinea (the Nigeria-Cameroon dispute over the Bakassi Peninsula and the Gabon-Equatorial Guinea dispute over the islands of Mbanie, Cocotiers, and Conga in the Corisco Bay) and two disputesin the Indian Ocean (the Mauritius-United Kingdom dispute over the Chagos Archipelago and the Comoros-France dispute over Mayotte). While most studies of territorial disputes in Africa have focused on the cases in mainland Africa, this study focuses on the disputes outside of the mainland, which have received only scant attention. Whereas the territorial disputes in the Gulf of Guinea are between African states, the territorial disputes in the Indian Ocean involve ex-colonial powers. Most territorial claims in Africa have been made based on pre-colonial history, common ethnicity, incomplete delimitation of the boundary, inconsistent evidence of the boundary, different interpretation of the delimitation treaty, and violation of the principle of uti possidetisby the ex-colonial power. European colonialism contributed to each of these bases, which are interconnected. Given the relatively large number of territorial disputes in Africa, the number of disputes that have escalated into war has been rather small. Most territorial disputes have been settled by peaceful means. This pattern will continue in the future.
