This study closely compared 16 different editions of Honggyewoljeon(홍계월전), divided them into several types and attempted to confirm the editions of rare and good conditions. By searching for the different editions of Honggyewoljeon close to the period of creation of its original, the study was aimed to set the groundwork of objective discussion for the work in the future.
The different editions of Honggyewoljeon could be largely divided into the system of Hanjungyeon( 한중연) 45-piece edition and that of Dangukdae(단국대) 103-piece edition. After looking closely into different individual editions of the two said systems, the study found that Hanjungyeon 45-piece edition had to be confirmed as the editions of rare and good conditions and the movable types needed to be utilized together in the former, while Dangukdae 103-piece edition equipped perfectly with the composition of ‘Prediction- Prediction’s Coming True’ had to be confirmed as the editions of rare and good conditions in the latter.
The system of Dangukdae 103-piece edition close to the original developed the fatalism, in which 'human life would simply be realized by pre-determined destiny, according to the prediction composition; therefore, it would be very different from Honggyewoljeon. In this regard, if the claim suggested in this study was correct, most of the existing researches on Honggyewoljeon would have serious problems. Above all things, it would seriously damage the seemingly careless attitudes of a majority of researchers who had repeatedly interpreted Honggyewoljeon as a paradigm of ‘an advanced sense of female consciousness’ based solely on the movable types that came latest without careful and sufficient consideration of its different editions.
