CVV의 첫 번째 모음이 활음으로 바뀔 때 일어나는 보상적 장음화는 음운론, 특히 moraic phonology에서 주로 연구된바 있으나 음성학적 연구는 이루어지지 않아 왔다. 본 논문은 한국어에서 나타나는 활음화 현상, 즉 /i, o/ 모음이 각각 /y, w/의 활음으로 바뀔 때 일어나는 보상적 장음화를 음성학적으로 실험, 분석함으로써 “모음의 활음화에 따른 보상적 장음화의 보상정도”를 비롯하여 “음운경계, 음절전부(onset)의 조음점” 등의 음운환경이 보상적 장음화에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 알아보고자 하였다. 보상적 장음화와 관련한 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다: 한국어의 경우, CVV의 첫 번째 모음의 /y, w/ 등의 활음으로 바뀔 때 마지막 모음에 의한 보상적 장음화가 흔히 나타나지만 100%의 보상은 이루어지지 않는다; 보상적 장음화는 활음 다음에 오는 모음에 전적으로 나타나며; 보상적 장음화는 단어의 어두개방음절(#_+)에서 가장 많이 발생하며, 그 다음 어중개방음절 (#CV_+), 그리고 폐쇄음절(#_C+)에서 가장 적게 일어난다; 음절전부의 조음점은 대체적으로 보상적 장음화에 중요한 영향을 미치지 않는다.

This paper is a report on the acoustic study of compensatory lengthening in Korean. With the focus on two series of tokens (/Ci?; Cy?/ and /Coa; Cwa/) pairs, we have tried to answer crucial questions on compensatory lengthening: if compensatory lengthening occur, how much of the temporal loss will be recovered; which syllabic constituent(s) take the burden of the temporal compensation; whether compensatory lengthening shows any meaningful variance in relation to boundaries, POA of the onset. First, it has been shown that compensatory lengthening commonly occurs in Korean when a vowel before another vowel turns into a glide. However, compensatory lengthening in general is not thorough enough to compensate for the entire durational loss. Second, the comparison of the onset in CVV and CGV pairs indicates that compensatory lengthening in Korean is taken care of exclusively by the vowel (V₃) following the glide. We have shown that compensatory lengthening in Korean is comparable to the representation of the same effect within the framework of moraic phonology in that the onset does not make any crucial contribution to compensatory lengthening. Third, compensatory lengthening in Korean shows much variance as a function of boundaries. Word-initial open syllable makes up a surer context for compensatory lengthening than word-medial open syllable, which in turn provides a better context than word-initial closed syllable. Last, we have shown that there is no significant variance in compensatory lengthening as a function of the POA of the onset in the case of /Coa: Cwa/; however, in the case of /Ci?; Cy?/ pairs, the palatal onset consonants make up the most elastic environment for compensatory lengthening because the most compensation in vowel duration as well as the most loss is found there.
Limited in several ways, the results of our phonetic study of compensatory lengthening need to be confirmed by employing fluent speech mode, more speakers in different ages and gender and if possible other languages with a similar phenomenon.
