The formulaic nature of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories has attracted particularly the attention of formalists who have used detective fiction as a paradigm for understanding narrative patterns. By examining the literary and ideological implications of Holmesian patterns of deduction in Doyle’s early work The Sign of Four, this essay explores the possibility of a narrative dynamic that goes beyond the formalists’ emphasis on the paradigmatic value of detective fiction. My analysis begins with the interrogation of the narratological analogy between the detective and the readers and proves that there is no way the readers can actually be educated in Holmes’s “science of deduction.” Jonathan Small’s narrative, which raises a question of justice, draws attention to another crucial difference between Holmes and the readers: whereas Holmes is too disinterested to care about his objects of analyses, the readers are capable of being emotionally involved with the characters in the narrative. As the values Holmes embodies--emotional detachment and pure love for truth--are undermined by Small’s questioning of the concept of justice, the ideological commitments of the genre of detective fiction are undermined. By putting too much emphasis on the intellectual aspect of human mind and overlooking the significance of emotional engagement of the readers, The Sign of Four paradoxically offers insight into the relationship between literature and natural science and their fundamental differences: unlike a scientific text that mainly demands the operation of an intellectual side of mind, a literary text requires the readers to be both intellectually and emotionally involved.
