When human communication is viewed as building and interpretation of mental spaces, differences of languages are reflection of differences of mental constructions in each language, and learning a second/foreign language is learning the differences of mental constructions. This paper examines the functions and meaning of transfer in L2 acquisition and its relation to mental space theory. In addition, through the investigation of the configurations of mental spaces with conditional statements in English and Korean, the synthetic consideration of second language acquisition sheds a light on the theory of language acquisition.
