It is a fact that a literary back ground and an external fact or which intended to reform a modernized politic & social contradiction after Anshi’s luan in an uprising of Guwenyundong. That is, because it was difficult to express an author’s thought or political comment exactly through using the existing style which had the limitation of composition and “Pianwen” based on the beauty of form, the reform and liberation of literary style was very urgent for literary men. Chinese Scholar “Zhuyingping ”stated that an argument out of literary styles developed by Guwenjia occupied an absolute majority. In the similar vein, it will seem to be understood.
In 《wentimingbian?xushuo》 written by Xushizeng, 7 discourses (Lun, Shuo, Yuan, Yi, Bian, Jie, and Shi) were presented. Because the discourses is a sentence which logically expresses the author’s thoughts and opinions, the discourse styles are the contradictory literary styles basically. However, 7 types discourse has the unique characteristics because each style is established as an independent literary style. In this study, the characteristics of “Bian” were examined through analyzing the representative “Bian” of Tang dynasty by considering the above points. As an object of the study, there is "Bian” contained in Hanyu, Liuzongyuan, Pirixiu, Luguimeng, Luoyin’s works, 《Wenyuanyinghua》 and 《Tangwencu i》, the representative collection of Tang dynasty.
In this study, “Bian” is defined as follows by referring to the literature analys and literary style-related books. “Bian" is defines as the literary style that the author argues and criticizes one issue selected by author and then proves its fault, and then insists the author’s own assertion or establishes a new theory. “Bian” has a common aspect in the composition rule. Because “Bian” is based on the existing accepted theory or the argument to other’s opinion, the author’s criticism is presented. Also, it thoroughly analyzed the wrong point or weaknesses of the object to be criticized. Depending on a case, the author makes another assertion. The general structure or development method of "Bian" is agreed, but the problem-raising method, author’s concrete method and subjects are too diversified. In other word, “Bian” can be mentioned as very liberal literary style in the writing style or style. It supports the fact of literary style caused by Guwenyundong and literary style reform. “Bian” contains an objective and close logic, so that it has the original function & character of discourse and very excellent literary character. It seems to be because literary men could well show their literary talent through liberal composition rules or style. Discourse focused on a development of logic can become easily strict or bald, but the creation of “Bian” is surely the start and big development of Chinese discourse. It has a significant meaning in a history of prose writings.
