The purpose of this study is to show the development process of space concept by studying on the Luis Barragan pre-architectural thinking. Generally speaking the idea of an architect is represented with a lot of mediums, and the architectural thinking is developed through the process. For national architectural expression of Mexico, Luis Barragan endeavored to fuse with modern architecture style, native style and colony style. As we can see through Luis Barragan’s work, he constantly endeavored to deny European style and to have his original style and modern solution.
The emotive-architecture is the very one which he tried to tell as a spatial character. By composing the spatial experience in terms of scenario and realizing the artificial environment to be inter penetrated with nature in terms of space and movement, he had finally added the qualities of "directions" and "activities" to his architecture. By doing so, what he wanted to express were the dignity of human and the greatness of the nature.
The purpose of this study is to show the development process of space concept by studying on the Luis Barragan pre-architectural thinking. Generally the idea of an architect is represented with lots of mediums, and the architectural thinking is developed through the process. Through the analysis of the essential elements of his works, we can find that Barragan harmonize Mexican vernacular with modern, reason with landscape. It is the recomposition of a tradition and identity, and it also can be a kind of solution of reinterpretation of history and tradition which we are faced with.
