Gravity currents and intrusions (gravity currents in stratified fluids) have been the subject of intensive research over the past 50 years. These flows arise naturally whenever there are horizontal density gradients in a fluid and can be found in many natural and man-made flows. Natural phenomena such as the sea breeze, the flow of river water into the sea, the intermingling of different water masses in the ocean, the 'morning glory' in the atmosphere over Australia, pyroclastic flows from volcanic eruptions and man-made flows arising from the accidental release of dense gas in the atmosphere and even the debris from the demolition of a tall building are all examples of these flows. Despite their wide applicability and the long history of research into these flows many fundamental questions are only now being answered.
