In this study, we classified Siberian high (SH) activity in the Northern Hemisphere winter into three modes according to the locations of their centers of action through varimax rotated principal component analysis. The propagation paths of wave-like patterns in the upper troposphere and different SH extension routes toward East Asia associated with each mode were investigated by lag correlation and composite methods. Wave-like patterns at the 300 h㎩ level are well established from the Atlantic through the European continent to the Siberian region 3 to 5 days before the maximum development of the SH. The propagation of wave-like patterns at 300 h㎩ follows different paths depending upon the SH mode. Notably, the location of the European center of action varies strongly between modes. At the 1000 h㎩ level, the extension of the SH toward East Asia refracts strongly southward around the edge of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, and also follows different routes depending upon the locations of SH activity centers. The wave-like patterns associated with the SH modes show a nearly equivalent barotropic structure over the Atlantic through the European continent and a baroclinic structure over East Asia which is assumed to be caused by the topographic effects of Tibetan Plateau.
