Thanks to the development of information visualization technology using the computer, multi-purpose digital 3D maps have been actively developed. Digital 3D maps require various elements including map outline, landmarks, roads, legends, and panoramas. Especially, it is necessary to develop legends as they can be widely used for various 3D interactions, and can be commonly recognized as a visual language for a map even with the difference in time, culture and society among the users. This study aims to develop legends for digital 3D tour maps that can be used with the Internet or navigators by tourists.
For the research, 136 map legends, which are established and can be developed, were collected by analyzing behavior of the tourists and environment of the tourist spot. Final 60 legends were selected among them based on the importance of their functions and formal expression. Next, users’ preference was investigated by collecting the real picture of the 60 legends, images and their associated languages. Then, the design works were collected by developing the design request sheets that could request the legend design to the professional designers. The collected design works were redesigned in unity after considering the graphic expression and symbolic implication. Finally, all the results were documented to be widely used for any kinds of digital formats.
When several maps are developed based on the developed legends, they can be recognized as the legends for international visual language. It is significant to preoccupy the cultural contents. Also, it is expected for the development process and its results to be the groundwork in developing legends for other map purposes.
