The purpose of this study is to illustrate the main characteristics of Feng Zhi(1905-1993)'s three collections of poetry: Songs of Yesterday 昨日之歌 (Zuori zhi ge, 1927), Northern Expedition and Others 北遊急基他 (Beiyou ji qita, 1929), and Sonnets 十四行集 (Shisihang ji, 1942). In analyzing the changing aspects of these collections in terms of his life and their historical context, I examine the following questions: What are the particular artistic styles and aesthetic ideas developed and preferred by him in each individual stage such as Songs of Yesterday Northern Expedition and Others, and Sonnets? In Feng Zhi's case, the experimentation with diverse modes of expression on each stage bespeaks a particular personal feeling, quality, or experience of modern Chinese history from 1921 to 1942. Avoiding both the excessive sentimentalism and the artistic view of serving society, his poetry reflects the poet's creative power based on contemplative thinking and artistic individuality.
The poems in Songs of Yesterday display his youthful frustration with laying emphasis on elaborate metaphors and novel expression, but their tore is calm and thoughtful. The second collection of Northern Expedition end Others, published within two years later notwithstanding conveys his deep sense of suffering and suffering on the socio-political unstableness in Harbin. In oder to enhance the poems' overall realistic tore, the poet juxtaposes gloomy imagery and uses repetitive modes of expression. The Sonnets, the most fascinating poetry collection in his life, represents his deep and introspective meditation on life and history. At the same time, his concern with both the formal aspect of sonnet and enthusiasm for suggestiveness of lyric is distinctly visible throughout this collection.
