The object of this thesis is to newly analyze the poem “Monologue at a flower garden” with the focus on ‘Saso’ as poetic I and the meaning of ‘flower’. I believe this thesis shall help to understand ‘narrative’ style which Seo Jung-Joo used often in his poems.
The history of literature generally considers the poetic works of Mi-Dang, Shilla-Cho -this poem is included- as Mi-Dang realized the search for eternity through Shilla spirit in Shilla-Cho. The Shilla spirit of Mi-Dang means the tales of Shilla. And Seo Jung-Joo’s poetry expressed them with narrative style. For the object of this thesis, I studied the meaning of ‘flower’ in Mi-Dang’s poetry and other poetry where ‘Saso’ appears as poetic I referring to <the study of Shilla> of unknown authorship- which I believe shall show Mi-Dang’s understanding of Shilla spirit.
With the method of study-introduced above-, I found out that the character of ‘Saso’ is that of a woman of Shilla who has common bitterness of life rather than that of mythology. ‘Flower’ can be interpreted as the images of ‘the open door to sky’ and ‘the well’. And they are related with the continuity of reality and eternity, enchantment, and the historical meaning of Shilla’s well in the establishment of Shilla. Based on this analysis we can understand Mi-Dang’s narrative style to some extent which would begin in a small anecdote or a pixel and finally be characterized as poetic I. And by this thesis I know now I have another task to explain Mi-Dang’s ‘narrative’ style, strains and structure which describe everything- even the universe and the eternity- as a story of a person.
