This essay aims to place Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility outside the reductionist frame of binary opposition. Focusing complex operations of co-dependency between a pair heroines, the essay examines the ways in which seemingly contesting values are deeply interlocking each other. The pair heroines represent feminine subjectivity in negotiation with the modern institution of nuclear family and the system of polite manners. As their struggle with romance and their trouble with manners are inextricably intertwined, concluding marriages come along with moments of enlightenment where they comprehend the profound interpenetration of the public and the private. The essay ultimately attempts to illuminate the possibility of locating Sense and Sensibility in the context of British domestic novel.
