There are numerous characters in Poe and Plath’s narratives, who can be categorized either as the observer or as the observed. Their narratives deal with the clinical observation process, in which the observation tends to overlook the polysemic characteristics of the unconscious. The observer usually confuses the world of unconscious with what he/she calls the sick or the abnormal, and Poe and Plath introduce a similar process in which the observer is psychologically separated from the observed. The observer functions as the master of madness (or death) who pretends to have some a priori knowledge of the unconscious, but the character is unable to be a part of the unconscious and fails to communicate with the observed. We soon realize how difficult it is to see the observers as sane people.
