In general it is said that the theme of Romeo and Juliet is characterized by the love Romeo and Juliet have for each other, which meets a tragic death, and yet is cherished in the minds of the readers as being eternal. This paper aims to find out how this theme can be delivered effectively by analyzing oxymorons which Romeo, Juliet, and minor characters use in the play.
The two most important elements out of six ones which Aristotle mentioned are character and language, because the readers are mostly affected by the personality of the characters and the speech they use. Of course, the hero and heroine of this play are Romeo and Juliet and oxymorons are highly characteristic of their speeches. Therefore, what kinds of personalities they have can be best defined by the oxymorons used by them.
The effect of oxymorons in this play can be summarized as follows: oxymorons used by two servants of the Capulets in the beginning is to offer erotic pleasures to the audience while at the same time to encourage them to be attentive. Prince Escalus's warning to the two families after the street fight is oxymoron-like. The effect of his statement drew together opposing issues, such as peace and hate, which is a theme of this play. The episode told by the Nurse also has an oxymoron-like language, which emphasizes the passionate side of Juliet's nature that the audience would soon discover.
Shakespeare used specific oxymorons to define the personalities of Romeo and Juliet; their wit and lyricism, thus offering important clues to theme and structure of the play. He also used them to emphasize and clarify the theme of appearance and reality on which much of the play depends.
In conclusion, the oxymorons in this play successfully represent the noble soul of human beings prevailing over the destroying forces, such as time and death, by the transcending love of Romeo and Juliet who have lived and died young in this contradictory world, where contrary things coexist.
