This study aims to analyze the reports of Maeil Shinbo about Russia and its revolution which affected the 3ㆍ1 Movement and socialist activities in Korea, and plus to critically interpret them. The selected time period for analysis is from the starting point of Russian Revolution, November 1917, to February 1920 when private newspapers emerged. The analysis was conducted based on such subject categories as geographical location, Russian Revolution and Russian domestic conflicts. The major findings of this analysis could be summarized like as follows:
First, the total number of news stories about Russia was 104 and the majority of them largely reported after the 3.1 Movement were about Russian Revolution. Second, the coverage about Russian geographical location was mainly discussed in relation to Japanese economic interest and Russia's political concerns within the context of Korea's geographical closeness. Third, about Russian Revolution, 〈Maeil Shinbo〉 was likely to report in a critical manner, additionally, regarding Russian domestic conflicts, hold a position to support Japan's dispatch of troops to Siberia in the name of Justice and Humanity, then later put forth practical policies for actually profits. Therefore, the findings of this study revealed that the reports of Maeil Shinbo about Russia actually played not only to block the influx of Russian revolution, but to pursue Japanese economic interests as a successful in-house newspaper for the Japanese colonial government.
