The current study examined the relationships between family communication patterns and offsprings' personalities and communication competence. First, we divided the family communication patterns into the two by using Family Communication Pattern (FCP) reflecting the different aspects of communicative features of relationship among family members. The first pattern emphasizes the conversation-orientation whereas the second one indicates the confirmity-orientation. We then examined how the two patterns are related with the offspring-related variables. Second, after dividing the two patterns into the four based on the average point of each pattern, we identified the four family communication types, consensual, protective, pluralistic, and laissez-fare families. We then examined the difference of the offspring-related variables among each type. Results showed the higher the conversation-orientation was, the stronger the offsprings' self-esteem, self-disclosure, internal locus of control, and communication competence were whereas the higher the conformity was, the lower their self-esteem, self-disclosure, and communication competence were. Finally the offsprings' self-esteem, self-disclosure, and communication competence of the pluralistic family were higher than the other family types whereas the same variables of the protective family were lower than the other family types. This indicates the importance of the family communication patterns in shaping its offsprings' personality and communication competence. Limitations and suggestions for future study were discussed thereafter.
