We tested the behavioral responses of black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris) chicks to the playbacks of their parental and neighboring mew calls to investigate whether they can discriminate between them and, if any, when the chicks started to recognize their parental mew calls from neighboring mew calls. We used a two-choice playback experiment in a three-choice test box in the lab. Ten chicks learned two types of mew calls on a different distance at the same call intensity (㏈): one type for parental calls and the other for neighboring calls. The chicks more significantly responded to the parental calls broadcasted in a near distance between 3-7 days after hatching. The result indicates that the chicks discriminate between parental and neighboring calls from earlier days after hatching similarly to other ground-nesting species. This is the first experiment to conduct the parental-neighboring recognition of growing chicks in colonial seabirds.
