Panax ginseng was tested as an immune stimulant with a killed avian influenza virus (AIV) vaccine in mice. Avian influenza vaccine containing Panax ginseng extract showed significantly higher antibody response compared to that of vaccine only. Moreover, isotypes of antibodies in test mice sera were compared to that of sera samples collected from control mice by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and increases in specific antibodies to the AIV vaccine were logarithmically enhanced by a boost immunization at 3 weeks after primary immunization. Increased total specific antibodies by HI test and IgG, IgM immune responses using ELISA in Panax ginseng treated groups indicate that Panax ginseng enhances humoral immune response to the AIV vaccine. These results reveal that Panax ginseng or specific fraction of this material can be used an immune stimulant in influenza vaccine preparation.
