The acute and subacute toxicities of malachite green were evaluated in guppy (Poecilia reticulatus). Dipping of fishes for acute toxicity was performed for a period of 24 hrs, and TLm24h value (median tolerance limit=LC??) was 0.23 ppm. Severe damages were observed in various organs and among them, clubbing of gill filaments, lytic degeneration and vacuolation of liver cells, and epithelial edema of renal tubules were relatively prominent. The most significant change was mild epithelial edema of gill lamellas in subacute toxicity test which fishes were exposed to 0.025 ppm of malachite green for 1week.
