The nocturnal high temperature (NHT) day observed in Seoul have been investigated during the summertime (June-September) from 2000 to 2003. The NHT day was defined as the day showing the lowest temperature of excess of 25℃ during 0100 - 0600 LST using the hourly air temperature data of AWS in Seoul. It was exposed on 116 days, occurring 29 days per one year on average, and was often lasted five and over days. According to the number of lasted day, the day was grouped into the non-lasted cases (≤ one day, 19 cases) and the lasted cases (≥ five days, 8 cases). The local and synoptic weather conditions between the non-lasted cases and the lasted cases were discussed to understand the meteorological characteristics associated with the development and the lasting of the nocturnal high temperature in summer. The non-lasted cases generally had more significant high temperature and weak wind in some of the all sites under weaken high or low pressure condition in northern of a stationary front (47%, 9/19 cases). On the other hand, most of the lasted cases showed high temperature distribution all over the sites and was dominated by strong southwesterly wind having warm-humid air parcel when the stationary front located north of Korea (75%, 6/8 cases). Besides they were lasted in weak-wind condition as being out of the specific pressure system (25%, 2/8 cases). The horizontal distribution of the u-component wind to analyze the change of land-sea breeze circulation with daily mean windspeed less than 3 ㎳?¹ showed that the lasted cases had more developed westerly (sea breeze) at 1500 LST and relatively weak easterly (land breeze) at 0300 LST than that of the non-lasted cases. In the case study for the period of 26 July - 6 August 2002, the NHT day on 29 July 2002 was caused under very weak-wind condition (mean : 1.4 ㎳?¹) after distribution of a higher daily maximum temperature (mean : 34.8℃) in daytime through the influence of regional thermal effect, and showing the separate high temperature cores. On 6 August 2002 was showed NHT day in all sites, but it had relatively low daily maximum temperature (mean : 27.8℃) with about 5.4 ㎳?¹ southwesterly between cold and warm front of extratropical cyclone as dynamic effect of synoptic-scale were intensified, and was simulated with MM5 which showed that the inflow was trapped by stable layer about 1.5 ㎞ over.
