This study was performed to compare the effects of tiletamine/zolazepam plus xylazine (TZX) and ketamine plus xylazine (KX) as induction agents for the enflurane anesthesia in miniature pigs. Four miniature pigs had intramuscular injection of the combination of tiletamine/zolazepam 6 ㎎/㎏ and xylazine 2 ㎎/㎏. On induction, sedation, analgesia, muscle relaxation, posture and auditory response were scored and induction time was measured. On maintenance anesthesia with 1.5% enflurane for 30 minutes, vital signs including heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), oxygen saturation (SpO₂), end-tidal CO₂ (ETCO₂) and rectal temperature (RT) were measured. On recovery, anesthesia, standing and walking time were recorded. Four weeks later, the combination of ketamine 20 ㎎/㎏ and xylazine 2 ㎎/㎏ was injected to the same miniature pigs and the identical study was performed. In result, induction time was significantly shorter in the TZX group (P < 0.05) and walking time was significantly shorter in the KX group (P < 0.05). And on induction duration, sedation and muscle relaxation score were significantly higher at 4 minute in the TZX group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). In vital sings, there was the significant decrease of RR in the KX group at 1 and 2 minute (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). In conclusion, TZX and KX could be used as injectable anesthetics for shortterm anesthesia and induction of inhalant anesthesia in miniature pigs. But when considering the induction time, tolerance for endotracheal intubation and change of vital signs, TZX is more suitable immobilization agent for tracheal intubation.
