The indirect aerosol effects were manifested by the contrasts of cloud microphysics between maritime and continental clouds measured in northeast Asia during the aircraft field project, Aerosol Characterization Experiment in Asia (ACE-Asia). Boundary layer average total particle (i.e., condensation nuclei) concentration in continental air mass nearly doubled the maritime (1972 ㎝?³ vs. 1017 ㎝?³). Correspondingly, average cloud droplet concentration of continental clouds was a factor of four higher than that of maritime clouds (238 ㎝?³ vs. 55 ㎝?³). Cloud droplet mean diameter of continental clouds was about half that of maritime clouds (6.7 ㎛ vs. 14.8 ㎛). Meanwhile, drizzle liquid water content of continental clouds is one-sixth of maritime clouds (0.012 g m?³ vs. 0.070 g m?³). These maritime/continental contrasts were greater than those previously observed in some other parts of the earth atmosphere, namely Florida and northeast Atlantic. During the Asian Dust event that overlapped in time and location with one of the continental flights, condensation nuclei concentrations were measured to be almost twice higher than those in the other continental flights that were not affected by Asian Dust. However, cloud droplet concentrations showed an opposite trend and other cloud microphysical parameters showed mixed results. Although the lack of enough data prevents a firm conclusion, these results seem to indicate that particles originated from Asian Dust do not notably affect cloud microphysics.
