Dynamical linkage between the stratosphere and troposphere during the evolution of major sudden warmings occurred in Februaries of 1979 and 1984 are investigated using NCEP reanalysis data. In 1984 case, which is characterized by strong amplitude of the zonal wavenumber 1 shortly before and after the onset of warming, impact of the sudden warming on temperature and zonal wind in the troposphere persists for more than 10 days after the warming, but it is not evidenced that the tropospheric temperature and wind anomalies after warming are originated from the stratosphere. In 1979 case, which is characterized by strong amplitude of the zonal wavenumber 2 shortly before and after the onset of warming, temperature and zonal wind anomalies in the troposphere after the warming seems to be connected from the stratosphere with some time lag. In order to investigate impact of the sudden warming on synoptic scale motions in the troposphere, amplitude of the zonal wavenumber 5 is analyzed. It was found that the amplitude of the zonal wavenumber 5 significantly varies in the troposphere from before to after the onset of warmings, especially in the middle latitudes with oscillatory behavior of meridional wavenumbers 1 and 2. In 1984 case, the subtropical jet at 500 hPa shows clear negative phase correlation with respect to polar night jet at 100 hPa during the evolution of the sudden warming, while it is not evidenced in 1979 case. Overall, dynamical linkage between the troposphere and stratosphere is clearly shown before and shortly after the onset of warming, but changes of the tropospheric circulation after warming is not likely originated from the stratosphere. Rather, it seems that the tropospheric circulation after the warming is due to the change of the zonal-mean zonal wind in the troposphere through the E-P flux divergence by planetary waves of various scales, which started from long before the onset of warming. The changed zonal-mean zonal wind in the troposphere, in turn, can excite and modify synoptic scale waves by instability processes and changing wave propagation condition, respectively.
