Aerosol hygroscopic growth and size distributions were measured using a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) / Tandem DMA (TDMA) system on board a Twin Otter airplane off the coast of Monterey, California during the April, 2003. The motivation for these measurements was to investigate the transport of Asian dust and to characterize the physical and hygroscopic properties of that aged dust reaching the California coast. Although no major dust event was captured during the study, distinct layers of dust that had been preserved during the transit across the Pacific were observed. Hygroscopic growth factor distributions of particles having initial dry particle diameters of 200 ㎚, 400 ㎚, and 600 ㎚ were measured during research flights. Highest quality data collected during 3 of those flights were used to investigate aerosol mixing state and identify the dust particles. Hygroscopic growth factors are strongly dependent on sizes. A distinct difference between the hygroscopic growth of the dust particles and other aerosol types present permitted isolation of a dust-only size distribution. In general, the relative contribution of dust particles to the overall size distribution varied from almost zero at the smallest particle size analyzed (200 ㎚), to almost 100% at the largest size analyzed (600 ㎚).
