This paper investigates the systematic differences between the tropical cyclone information issued by the two typhoon centers in the western North Pacific (the RSMC Tokyo and the JTWC Honolulu) by analyzing fifty-year best track data sets from the two organizations. It is found that the JTWC’s winds are greater than those of RSMC on the average. The reason for this discrepancy stems mainly from the differences in wind definitions. The former uses one-minute sustained wind and the latter adopts ten-minute wind. In addition, the JTWC’s overestimating tendency is salient especially for stronger storms. Recent improvements in the analysis technique have reduced the difference between the two organizations but a clear difference is still evident especially for stronger cyclones. A great difference exists between the two organizations’ report in the annual total numbers of the tropical cyclone geneses and the climatological top-ten records. The difference between their reported annual total numbers is even greater for stronger storms. Especially the difference in climatology between the RSMC and the JTWC best track data is pronounced for the intensity-related factors. The reason for this discrepancy is again due to the difference in wind definition.
