This paper explores various figurative, metaphoric expressions in Korean and American political discourse within the framework of cognitive linguistics and discourse analysis. Based on the presidential candidates ' live TV debates in Korea and the U.S., this paper examines the major five metaphoric mechanism including metaphor, metonymy, personification, analogy, and proverbs/ idioms with focus on the politicians ' interactive, psychological, and communicative motivations. This comparative analysis demonstrates that Korean and American politicians effectively, strategically employ the five mechanisms to achieve various interactional goals. This study claims that the five mechanisms and strategies are cognitive and cultural phenomena, and that they are better understood with reference to the issue of language in use and the relationship between language, culture, and cognition.
