The purpose of this study is to examine strategies to overcome the Look of the Other through some characters in The Bluest Eye. Most critics of Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye focus on the effect of the dominant white society and its standards of beauty on the black community. But she does not show us only the dilemma of blacks in a white society. She stresses the importance of an existential individual with a free will through the novel. The human relations are the ones between Me and the Other. According to Sartre, the Other is the one who looks at me and makes me the object. And the one to be looked at by the Other feels humiliation under its look.
But the most important thing is not the object(ness) of us, but the results of the Me and Other relationship. The effect of the Look is powerful, especially on vulnerable and fragile individual outsiders. Furthermore, the Look could prevent the individuals from shaping a healthy identity and living according to their essential properties. Morrison’s characters in this novel, Cholly, Pauline and Pecola, can’t survive under the Look of the Other. And unhealthy attitudes can be passed down to children from parents with deformed identities.
Morrison shows and foregrounds the miserable and tragic victims of the Look in the novel. But she never misses the possibility and hope of overcoming the Look, revealing the existence and survival of an individual with a free will. That’s the point I stress. The problem of overcoming the Look is not something new but among the overflooding ideologies, our highest priority lies in shaping and retaining, and sometimes retrieving our essential properties and subject position.
