The aim of this essay is to elucidate the methods of preserving and modernization of JinJuGumMu. In Korea, traditionally, there have been five kinds of GumMu(Sword Dance). Of these, only JinJuGumMu. was designated as national treasure of treasure of intangible cultural property by the Ministry of Culture and Sightseeing in 1967.
JinJuGumMu. was presered well as one of the most important source materials of Korean traditional Dance. And we cannot deny the importance of source materials when we use them as a method of academic or artistic pursuit. But here we should rethink that whether it is enough if we are satisfied that preserving the old tradition.
All art forms including dance are changing. So is JinJuGumMu. So we should try to modernize the old art to make it more precious. Therefore, it is necessary for us to recognize the importance of the source material. And to try to find out various kind of artistic and choreographic method to modernize JinJuGumMu.
