The panel zone deformation is known as a major parameter to affect the nonlinear behavior of steel moment resisting frames under earthquake loads. Especially in weak column-strong beam condition, it is very distinguished. As the strong column-weak beam condition is not specified in the Korean design code, the panel zone deformation may be significant. In this study the effect of panel zone effect on the progressive collapse resisting capacity of steel moment frames was investigated. The results showed that the panel zone deformation of structures designed by the Korean Building Code highly depends on the location of the column removal. According to the analysis results, the panel zone deformation turned out to be very severe if the removed column was located at the bay including an exterior panel zone. On the other hand, the panel zone was not significant if the bay did not include an exterior panel zone. As the number of story increased, the effect of the weak panel zone on the overall behavior decreased regardless of the panel zone strength and the location of the column removed. It was also found that the panel zone deformation had little effect on the overall behavior of structures designed considering seismic load specified in the design code even though the panel zone was not reinforced.
