The globalization of mass societies and the porous pluralism of late modernity confront all contemporary world religions with similar problems of structural differentiation and privatization - predicaments that bear on their place in the modem world. I thus conclude in one paper (Kim 2002: 186) that the main structural dilemma of world religions is that even as the privatized (pure) function of religions waxes, their public influence wanes. Many foresee increasingly widespread spiritual concerns, as free market economy development spreads and, with it, heightened belief in the value of the autonomous person. Regarding contemporary cultural shift in relation to the spheres of religion and spirituality, we can say that the shift from ‘religion’ to ‘spirituality’ or the so-called ‘subjective tum’ is associated with ‘advanced’ industrial society. For instance, left-wing hippies (Aquarians) and right-wing fundamentalists (Evangelicals) both sought firsthand spiritual experience in response to the increasing gulf between globalization and identity. Drawing attention to the pernicious social effects of neo-liberalism, this study focuses on the fact that ‘market mentality’ is now infiltrating all aspects of human cultural expression in advanced capitalist societies. From this, the study examines the growing commercialization of ‘religion’ in the form of the popular notion of ‘spirituality.’ In conclusion, this study also discusses the social implications of the global rebirth of experiential spiritualities.
