Objectives of this study are: 1) to analyze paths of urbanization, 2) to examine changes in the spatial structure and urbanization pattern, and 3) to investigate major types of change in the overlapping regions of Seoul-Incheon Metropolitan fringes.
The primary findings of this study includes:
First, the residential suburbanization has been going on rapidly around Gumdan District (Incheon), where is located in the overlapping region under the Metropolises's influence. Population size of Gumdan District's has been growing fast from 8,568 in 1970 to 55,784 in 2000. Second, the regional industrial sectors also have followed the pattern of the rapid urbanization. The number of firms located in the case region amounted to 1,890 in 2000. Third. since 1995 when it was merged to Incheon City's administration, the speed of urbanization has been accelerated more rapidly. In 1997, immediately after incorporation to Incheon City, the number of population in the case region was 21,397 persons. But in less than 4 years (2001), the number of population amounted to 59,943. And the number of firms in the case region also increased largely. In 1995, just before the administrative merge, it's number were only 262. But only after 5 years (2000), the number of firms amounted to 1,890, corresponding to 7.2 times that of 1995.
We have become to conclude that the Gumdan Area will grow further in the future, and it will be due to growing influence of the Incheon Metropolitan Area. Besides the major findings of the case area, this study shows various evidence of changes and developmental patterns in the typical urban-local overlapping areas in Korea.
