This study aims to suggest design guidelines that can help domestic 'Townhouse' be developed continuously as a new type of Urban housing. Although the sales of 'Townhouse' in suburban area have been increasing sharply due to the spread of 'District for Housing Development' and 'Block-type Single-family Housing Lots', the efforts to apply it into urban area have not been sufficient. To apply 'Townhouse' as a Low-Rise High-Density urban housing type, its clear definition and characters have to be understood. Moreover, the reasonable solutions for the problems of being excessively luxurious and large in suburban area - caused by institutional limits - must be provided.
For these purposes, this study clarified the background and the definition of townhouse. It also drew merits, demerits and other characters of townhouse by analysing domestic cases since 2006. Furthermore, it classified the plan types within the framework of site location, site planning methods, building combination and the institutional aspects, to make the results of this study applicable to real situations.
