Theory of regulation, which is based upon the tradition of the critical theory and interested in the historical transformation of post-war capitalism, is an exemplar of a critical reconstruction of traditional marxist theory. The theory of regulation draws our attention in that it emphasizes the social base of economic phenomenon, which had been regarded as dispensible in the traditional marxism. From the standpoint that the methodological presumption of the theory of regulation keeps an eye on 'the integration of structure and action,' a methodological concern of contemporary sociological theories, this study aims to investigate how much this methodological position is held and reflected in the concrete conceptualization and the contents of theory and to examine the implications about what are the theoretical preconditions for the application of the theory of regulation on the analyses of Korean society.
In summary, it is maintained that the theory of regulation doesn't reflect its methodological presumption of 'the integration of structure and action' sufficiently in its conceptualization and the contents of theory and consequently it still tends to be west-oriented and macroeconomics-oriented in the empirical studies. In order to realize the 'return of actor' on the level of theory construction, the followings should be critically reflected on the level of analysis-frame construction; 1) the diversity of regulations in the nation-states and 2) the emphasis on socio-cultural process, not only on political process. In conclusion, the implications of this theoretical critic for the application in Korea are examined and suggestions are made on the direction of empirical research.
