Social imagination in Pansori literature has been discussed with the concept of reality recognition to a certain extent so far. From the discussion, we have been able to find out that Pansori was such a mediational artistic genre, with which low class people, who mainly enjoyed Pansori, tried to highlight problematic situations based on their subjective recognition of the reality in late Chosun. However, in the course of such discussion, I think, the problem of simplifying the low class people’s recognition as the governed class’s resistant discourse against the governing class has been caused. It was the case, of course, that the resistant consciousness or emotion occupied the core position on the thematic side of Pansori works. However, if we look at them scene by scene, we cannot overlook a phenomenon in which the low class’ emotions and consciousnesses are entangled in a complex aspect. From such an aspect, we can notice contradictory emotions, and also feel their bended gaze at themselves. The reason why this paper pays attention to the grotesqueness as a variation of social imagination is for putting such features in a net.
The grotesqueness in Pansori literature in general has a functional meaning, in that as we can see from the amusement between Nolbu and Jangbi, and between Jojo and soldiers, it contains problems in reality by lowering the authority of the privileged class or the governing class, and setting their relations freshly. The laughter triggered by it is a kind of cannibalistic laughter with the low class people as the subject. However, it is impossible to make explicit the grotesqueness in Pansori literature only with this. The self-defensive laughter also was contained in the figure of the grotesqueness, which takes as its backgrounds the cruel life environment in which they were exploited multiply, their non-thorough recognition of the contradictions in social reality, and the situation where they were not able to afford a social composure as much as they embraced the extreme poor or the disabled. I believe that we can reveal the contemporary implications of the grotesqueness only when we look at such a point.
