The response of potatoes to winter cropping in southern areas of Korea was tested. Twelve potato cultivars recommended by the Korean government were grown in the farmers' fields under non-heated plastic house condition. Mean air temperature under the plastic houses was 6 to 23℃ compared to soil temperatures in the range of 11 to 21℃. Relative humidity decreased from 75-95% in January to 65-85% in early May. Five cultivars of ‘Namsuh’, ‘Gawon’, ‘Jopung’, ‘Jowon’, and ‘Chubaek’ had faster growth early in the season and higher tuber yield compared to conventional winter potato cultivars ‘Superior’ and ‘Dejima’. The five cultivars produced higher marketable tuber yields, particularly in early harvest 100 days after planting (DAP). Average marketable yield of the cultivars was 21 (100 DAP) to 28% (120 DAP) higher than that of ‘Superior’. Although specific gravity of the cultivars was lower than that of ‘Superior’, these cultivars could be recommended for winter potato production because of the large size and round shape of the tubers, and disease resistance which are basic characteristics preferred by winter cropping farmers.
