Most farmers have cultivated Ardisia pusilla, foliage plant native to Korea, under various temperatures and shading levels without a typical cultivation technology. This research was initiated to screen an adequate shading level and temperature for promoting photosynthesis of A. pusilla and also to provide practical information for A. pusilla-nursery through comparing photosynthetic rates with plant growth parameters. In shading experiment, photosynthetic rates of two-year-old A. pusilla plants acclimatized on four shading levels (0, 70, 80, and 90%) of sunlight for 35 days were measured using continuous sunlight transmitted through each shading net. In temperature experiment, two-month-old A. pusilla plants acclimatized at 20, 25, 30, and 35℃ under constant artificial light (450 ± 21 μ㏖ㆍm?²ㆍs?¹) within each large-scale chamber for 30 days were measured using incident artificial light. The measurements of net CO₂ assimilation rates (ACO2) in response to continuous photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) under sunlight revealed the typical characteristics of photosynthesis. Maximum CO₂ assimilation rate (Amax) for 90, 80, 70, and 0% of shading level (SL) was 10.21, 8.04, 4.52, and 3.13 μ㏖ㆍm?²ㆍs?¹, respectively. Light compensation points (Γlight) for 90, 80, and 70% of SL was greatly lower than that for 0% of SL. ACO₂ also showed the exponential regression curves as typical characteristics of photosynthesis at each temperature. ACO₂ was higher at 25℃ than at 20℃ by about 3 μ㏖ㆍm?²ㆍs?¹ depending on PPF ranged from 0 to 1,800 μ㏖ㆍm?²ㆍs?¹. Amax of A. pusilla acclimatized under 20, 25, 30, and 35℃ were 1.17, 4.09, 3.72, and 2.26 μ㏖ㆍm?²ㆍs?¹, respectively. The Γlight at 25℃ was greatly lower than at any other temperature. Comparing plant growth data, the plants acclimatized at 25℃ showed the highest values of all growth parameters such as plant height, leaf area, and dry weight, while the plants acclimatized under various SLs showed significant difference in chlorophyll value and leaf length. In conclusion, photosynthetic characteristics of A. pusilla plant distinctly depended on shading and temperature, and optimal value of two main factors promoting its photosynthesis and growth was 90% SL and 25℃.
