To investigate the cause of hybrid sterility in interspecific crosses between Capsicum annuum and C. baccatum, microsporogenesis and anther wall development were compared between the parents and their interspecific F₁ hybrids. No single seed set for the two F₁ hybrids was found to be due to complete pollen sterility. Meiotic chromosomal behaviors were irregular in the two F₁ hybrids. Some univalents or multivalents were observed at diakinesis and metaphase I, while irregular chromosome disjunction and lagging chromosomes were formed during anaphase I and telophase I. Additionally, irregular chromosome segregation and laggards were observed at telophase Ⅱ and micronuclei varying in numbers from 0 to 4 were observed in some of the F₁ hybrid pollen mother cells. For anther wall development, degeneration of the tapetum cell layer around the tetrad stage of microspores was shown to be associated with pollen abortion in the two F₁ hybrids. Therefore, irregular meiosis during microsporogenesis led directly to pollen abortion, while the degenerated tapetum layer indirectly caused the hybrid sterility.
