Dry heat treatment (DHT) has been recently proven to be one of the most efficient seed sterilization methods for high-grade vegetable seeds. However, it was observed that dry heat treated seeds frequently show DHTinduced phytotoxicity and some decay problems during seed germination, i.e., yellowing of root cap followed by softening and browning of root progressively from the root tip to the upper roots. Severe restriction of secondary root growth was also observed especially when the germination tests were conducted under laboratory conditions. Early germination percentage, but not the final one, was frequently reduced by DHT in some cucurbitaceous crops. Severe contamination of air-borne fungi, most noticeably Mucor and Rhizopus, was found to be closely associated with this DHT induced germination problem. It is therefore recommended that seed lots of some cucurbitaceous crops, once treated with dry heat, should be thoroughly treated again with effective fungicides prior to sowing. Captan and Thioram were found to be effective in minimizing the DHT-induced decay during the germination.
