French who have lived during the period of German Occupation have different attitudes and experiences toward Germany and Vichy Regime depending on their located areas which are the Zone occupied by Germany and Free Zone. People who were members of the Collaborators and the Resistants each had different experiences and memories as well. Since then, both sides suffered from Trauma, which can recur conflicts when both sides' disagreement and political issues relating to the native country occur. Henry Rousso named this conflicts Vichy Syndrom.
Citizens of Vichy, located in the central France, have the special experience through Vichy Regime. The reason is that Vichy was Vichy regime's temporary capital. Therefore, as Vichy became the capital city, their citizens had gone through dramatic changes in their daily lives, and they had to either support or defy the Vichy regime.
The point that this dissertation is trying to insist is that Vichy citizen's resistance and support toward the Vichy regime is not clear. The support from the Rightists, the entrepreneurs, and the agricultural cooperative association leaders is obvious when analyzing the supporters of the Vichy Regime. These groups foresaw that the period of domination by the Germans will last long; thus, they supported Germany and the Vichy Regime with strong conviction. On the other hand, a small group of young women who moved to Vichy from the nearby rural districts also supported the Vichy Regime as they experienced the breakout and the feeling of release from the rural society by living in the temporary capitol and meeting German soldiers. Moreover, some of the young men who lived in Vichy and the vicinity of Vichy were involved in fringe organizations, the police, and the militia. These young men were curious in their new life and interested in their change of lifestyle after they took part in the Vichy Regime.
In contrary, the resistance against the regime can be distinguished into two parts. The first part starts from the ideology or patriotism to the country, and the other from the indifference towards the Vichy regime which changed to resistance as the oppression and exploitation of Germany toward France became severe in the later Vichy regime. The former was mostly communist members or labor union members, and the latter has the trait of deciding their position according to the weight of everyday life rather than ideology. Especially, there were many cases of the resident individuals expressing resistance after having passed the moment which is connected directly to their lives, due to holding off stating their position towards the Vichy regime.
In conclusion, although the Vichy residents during the regime cooperated or resisted against Germany and the Vichy regime, it wasn't consistent. And the majority kept silence, and in the decisive moment, indirectly and reluctantly expressed their position, in the form of support or resistance of the regime.
