Orimulsion<SUP>®</SUP>, a fuel manufactured by Venezuelar PDVSA-BITOR, is an emulsion of natural bitumen(approximately 70%), freshwater(approximately 30%), and surfactant package(＜0.2%). Orimulsion-400 is the most current formulation of the fuel.
The Orimulsion was characterized by capillary GC/FID and GC/MS in order to obtain a hydrocarbon fingerprint and PAH patterns of the bitumen. The GC/FID chromatogram of Orimulsion is remarkable in that it show an absence of n-alkane hydrocarbons and large unresolved mass. But GC/MS ion chromatogram show PAHs, alkylated PAH compounds and dibenzothiophene patterns.
Orimulsion products have never been spilled into the marine environment but should an accidental spill occur, contingency plans and clean up equipment are available for response. If Orimulsion is accidentally spilled into the aquatic environment, the water phase(30 percent freshwater) will Quickly dilute into the surrounding water and the bitumen particles will disperse throughout the water column.
