Chemical index such as concentrations of COD, nutrients, and several contaminants are currently used as criteria of marine environmental quality in Korea and the same for the environmental impact assessment. However, these kinds of quality criteria are inadequate for the protection of marine organisms from hazardous materials including heavy metals, persistent organic compounds, and unknown toxicants. The reason is that there are over 100,000 of commercially used chemical compounds in the environment and we can't measure all. Bioassays are used as a complementary techniques because they give toxicity informations on biological adverse effects of toxicants in marine environment. Environmental impacts can be evaluated with this toxicological profiles and informations. Various kinds of bioassays have been developed and used for the environmental impact assessment and regulation in foreign countries but these skills are largely in developing stage in Korea. Here, we introduce the methodologies and test results of some bioassays which have been developed and used in our lab. It covers recombinant cell line bioassays, sea urchin fertilization/development test, microtox test, amphipod toxicity test, fish toxicity test, and community disturbance survey. Hopefully, various bioassays will be developed, standardized, and used for the purpose of the biomonitoring of toxicants, the environmental impact assessment, establishment of marine environmental quality criteria, in Korean coastal areas in the near future.
