This work investigates the field effect on nitrogen oxide pollutant formation and emission composition of premixed flames in order to provide better insight on the mechanism of controlling the combustion process by electro-physical means. In light of the potential application in oxygen enhanced combustion, the study aims to investigate experimentally the effect of radial DC electric field on premixed laminar methane flame under oxygen-enriched conditions. The electric field effect on emission composition and NO emission index were investigated experimentally for different equivalence ratio and level of oxygen enrichment. In this study however, limitation on the applied voltage was imposed such that the flame shape was not significantly altered with the action of electric field. A marginal reduction in NO emission was observed for flames burning CH₄/air mixture under electric field. It seemed that electric field on flames with geometry that remains practically undeformed produces a very minimal reduction on pollutant emission. Higher oxygen content in the oxidizer produces a more robust flame, offering greater resistance to field-induced modification due to ionic winds. As such, the reduction in NO disappears as the level of oxygen enrichment is increased.
