Since Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux published his translation of Longinus's treatise On the Sublime with full paraphrases and commentaries in 1674, a new and more profound conception of aesthetic subjectivity became a new field of aesthetic problems in the middle of eighteenth century. Edmund Burke's Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful has the first systematic attempt to present the problem of the sublime to the same level as the problem of the beautiful. His book is also a psychological approach to distinguish the sublime from the beautiful: through the senses certain objective properties of a thing or an activity impinge upon the mind of the perceiver. Although there is rather a large influence of Longinus over Burke's idea on the sublime, there are also clear and vivid traces of Aristotle's literary criticism on his aesthetic theory. This paper is to investigate the existence and nature of any relevance between Aristotle's Catharsis and Burke's Sublime as well as any difference between them. The first section illuminates the sources of both aesthetic experiences; the second their effect on the human mind; the third their vicariousness; the last, the subjectivity of the human being in the modern world.
