This study sought to investigate the current status of Filipino women who have received theological education and to propose suggestions to guide theological schools in the Philippines for higher quality curriculum that would prepare women for the conditions of ministerial or job opportunities. Two research methods were employed. One was conducted by surveying the theological education of 119 women respondents who were currently serving the churches in Northern Luzon, Philippines. Secondly, the curriculum of seven denominational theological schools where the respondents attended were collected and analyzed.
The current trend of theological education for women was theoretically reviewed. Recent research shows that while women acknowledged their theological education as helpful to their ministry, there were problems and needs expressed for improvement. Although more women than before are enrolling in seminaries or theological schools, and applying for ordination, most of the curriculum remains male oriented. Many women expressed on the survey a need for theological education that addresses the needs of women in ministry.
Three major findings were found in this research. First, most respondents agreed that their theological education was useful in their ministry. This signifies a positive attitude toward their theological schools. The result, however, conflicted with what they suggested for improving theological schools. Furthermore, it was surveyed that the current theological curriculum was inadequate for women. Students are limited to the compulsory courses needed for ordination; therefore, the curriculum did not fully equip women for their unique ministerial roles. Second, the curriculum of the seven denominational schools showed limited course offerings dealing with women’s concerns. Third, the respondents unanimously suggested including curriculum that addresses women’s concerns within the mainstream of theological education to better prepare women for ministry.
The findings of this study would make a difference if diverse population of respondents were sampled and included a broader scope of denominations. For a more in depth study, syllabus or course descriptions need to be surveyed.
